Donald Trump, who is the 47th president of the United States, signed an order on building a missile defense system.

This idea is similar to Israel’s Iron Dome system and also to a plan ( the Strategic Defense Initiative) from 1983, which was suggested by former president Ronald Reagan.

As Al-Jazeera reported:

United States President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has selected a $175bn design for the multilayered Golden Dome missile defence programme aimed at countering aerial threats “even if they are launched from space”

On January 27, 2025, Trump announced the Golden Dome Project. A system designed to stop powerful weapons. He also said the system would use sensors and interceptors in space.

The Pentagon chief, Pete Hegseth, is going to lead the project. Hegseth who has been involved in restoring the warrior ethos and reestablishing deterrence. A project that will be built just like the Iron Dome system of Israel.

With a total cost of $175 billion in total, the Golden Dome will be ready in about three years. It will be the first weapon the U.S. will place in space.

How much is the Golden Dome defence system capable of?

To some extent, it will be able to stop missiles from anywhere around the world. A system so powerful, even if the missiles will come from seven seas across, or from space, this defence system has the capability to destroy them.

“Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world, and even if they are launched from space,” Trump said.

Moreover, this system will stop powerful weapons carrying either regular explosive or nuclear weapons, such as:

  1. Hypersonic missiles
  2. Ballistic missiles
  3. Advanced cruise missiles

There will be a use of advanced new technology on land, sea and space. Special sensors and interceptors will be placed in space to operate this mission.

Very bold approach by President Trump to keep the United States of America safe and strong. But what does America’s biggest rival, China, have to say?

China’s Serious Concerns About The Project

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning was asked about the project. She said China has “serious concerns” and Washington should abandon its development.

She said it seems very aggressive and could increase the chances of turning space into a military zone and starting a weapons race.

“The United States puts its own interests first and is obsessed with seeking its own absolute security, which violates the principle that no country’s security should come at the expense of others,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular briefing.

Final Words

The Golden Dome project is no doubt a bold and ambitious step by President Donald Trump just to strengthen America’s national defense. But this defence system is not just about using AI and softwares, it can cause grave issues.

Do you think it will provoke an arms race around the world like China says?
